In 1705 BC Hammurabi created his code of laws. This code consisted of 282 laws.

This code was used to unify all group of the Babylonian empire.

"to cause justice to prevail in the land, destroy wicked and evil, prevent strong from oppressing the weak and further the welfare of the people"

A famous paraphrased expression from this code was "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

One of the important characteristics of this Code is that it follows the ‘eye for an eye principle’ which shows its antiquity. This is based on the equality of justice principle and is contrary to many modern principles of justice, like equity and good conscience.
