It is important for scientists to utilize the scientific method (to the extent of applying this in everyday life). Generally, the basic steps of scientific method are: making observations, preparing a hypothesis, designing an experiment, analyzing results, and to finally make a conclusion.
This means that if a scientist makes an observation that is quite unnatural to what he currently knows, it is important for him to question existing ideas and propose a new hypothesis.
