You must be able to keep your audience's motivation in mind in order to persuade them into what are you saying, because keeping in mind, what the audience wants gives you an opportunity to support you on your side, winning them and making your persuasion more relevant to them, which gets them hooked.

The main reason why you want to persuade people is to make them empathize with your views and opinions, such that they side with you in the end of your argument. Thus, it is a pre-requisite to consider the motivation of your audience because you will start the connection by winning them over. And it only starts by looking at the things from their perspective.
