Most phone numbers are seven digits long, and this fits within the memory span of digits for most people. when is it helpful to convert the numbers into the letters on the phone keypad? how does such a conversion relate to memory span?

It is helpful to convert phone numbers into letters when you are advertising for a business.  For example, if you were advertising for a fish market, the phone number could be something like "123-FISH".  This is helpful to remember the numbers for a lot of people.  It's a lot more likely someone will remember  "123-FISH" than a bunch of random numbers.

Memory span has to do with what a person can correctly or accurately remember within a limited time or short frame of time after they are taught such as:

•Numbers or digits

•Letters

•Address etc

Some  individual may find it difficult to remember  long numbers based on the fact that seven numbers is what the sensory memory can contain.

It is helpful to convert the digits into the letters on the phone keypad when it is difficult to remember those numbers especially in a situation where the numbers are  too long.

Conversion from numbers to words  relate to memory span as some  people may  have short term memories while others may have long term memories.

People with short term memory  that find it hard to remember long numbers within some seconds can easily covert those numbers to letters which means that  each letters will represent  each digits.

Example 1 may represent a, 2 may represent b, 3 may represent c and so on.

By this their storage memory can easily retain those numbers in letters for a long period of time.
