What does Schmidtz mean when he says "society is not a race"?
A) Races are optional. You can choose whether or not to run. The same is not true of living in society.
B) Society is more or less compulsory. Races have definite prizes. Society does not.
C) The point of justice is not the search for reward but finding a good way to live. The point of society is not to measure relative performance. A strictly level playing field is therefore not necessary.
D) Competition is important in athletic events, but not so much in society. Competitive markets are therefore not necessary in society.
